Find out what the work is really worth

A dripping tap or a house on bare land. Describe it once, and the people who could do it each give a price without seeing anyone else’s — so nobody shades their number against a rival. You see every price, and you choose.

Free for customers, always. The winner pays under $10 on a repair, $25 to $175 on a set of drawings. Everybody who does not win pays nothing.

What are you trying to do?

Not sure which? Start with the middle one. Whoever you hire first will tell you what the city wants.

This app works in California. What it tells you about licences, permits and what you may do yourself is California law, and it is different in every other state.

3 sealed prices

$975

The middle price. Usually the fairest guide to what this work is worth.

$260 between the cheapest and the dearest. Every figure is the full price — what each tradesperson would charge once their extras are added on.

How it works

  1. 1

    Say what needs doing

A sentence in your own words and a photo or two. No forms full of jargon, and no phone calls.

  2. 2

    Tradespeople price it, sealed

Each one submits a price without seeing any other, or even how many others have bid. There is nothing to shade a number against.

  3. 3

You see every price, and choose

The spread between them is your answer. Take the cheapest, or the one who can finish soonest — it is your call, not ours.

What it costs

If you need work done

Free

Always. Posting a job, seeing every price and choosing someone costs nothing, and there is no card to add.

If you do the work

Under $10

Tradespeople pay only when they win. Joining is free, bidding is free, and losing is free. The winner pays a flat fee — $7.77 on jobs up to $500, $8.88 up to $1,000, and $9.99 above that — worked out on the full price including anything marked as extra. The architects and engineers a permit calls for have their own ladder, $25 to $175, because a set of drawings is not a repair. That fee is what releases the customer’s address, and it is the only thing we ever charge.

The rules that make it honest

A marketplace is only as good as what it refuses to do. These are ours.

  • Nobody sees a rival's price

Not in the page, not hidden in the data behind it. It is enforced on the server and checked by twelve tests that must pass before anything ships.

  • Everyone prices the same list

The app publishes what the job includes, and a bid that skips items is refused rather than compared. Nobody wins by quietly leaving work out.

  • Your address stays yours

Bidders see a neighbourhood, never your address. Photos are stripped of the location your phone hides inside them before anyone else can see them.

  • Finishing counts, not starting

Anyone can say they will start tomorrow. Every bidder also says when the work would be finished, and that is what you compare on.
